FAQS

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM EMDR?

EMDR LEARN MORE

EMDR addresses the psychological and physical symptoms stemming from adverse life experiences, however, EMDR is not just for clearing what is stuck/left over in the body/mind/brain after trauma;  it is also utilized for clearing out limiting beliefs, optimizing peak performance and enhancing access to innate resources and resilience.

EMDR is clinically proven to treat stress, anxiety, depression and trauma.  Our memories are stored in neural networks in our brains. When the system is overwhelmed by too much too soon, not enough for too long, an adverse experience, or disturbing event- the memory can become stuck in a neural pathway. Conscious and/or unconscious associations with the stuck memory can trigger the fight/flight/freeze response.

EMDR identifies events at the root of the symptoms and as you are guided through the EMDR process- using eye movements or alternating tapping- your parasympathetic (calm/safe) nervous system is activated.  The emotional and physical charge of the distressing memory becomes unstuck- allowing the opportunity for the images, sensations, sensory experience, emotions and beliefs to be processed, resolved and cleared out of the brain/mind/body.

WHY AN INTENSIVE INSTEAD OF A NORMAL 50-MINUTE PSYCHOTHERAPY SESSION?

EMDR intensives allow the opportunity to progress through your symptoms in a more succinct and focused way without the interruption of a 50-minute session. An intensive format may decrease overall treatment time because of time not spent on: a) checking in at the beginning of each session, b) addressing current crises and concerns, c) focusing on stabilizing and coping skills that the client won’t need after healing, or d) assisting the client in regaining composure at the end of the session.

WHAT IS FLASH TECHNIQUE?

Flash

The Flash Technique (FT) is a cutting edge recently developed therapeutic intervention demonstrated to be effective in reducing the disturbance associated with traumatic or other distressing memories. Unlike many conventional trauma therapy interventions, FT is a minimally intrusive option that does not require the client to consciously engage with the traumatic memory. This allows the unprocessed traumatic information stuck in neural network to be resolved in the brain without the client feeling distress.

A POWERFUL COMBINATION: FLASH AND EMDR CAN POTENTIALLY ELIMINATE YOUR SYMPTOMS IN AN EFFICIENT AND PERMANENT WAY. IN THE INTENSIVE FORMAT, WORKING MEMORY IS CHALLENGED IN A WAY THAT OFTEN LEADS TO SIGNIFICANT SYMPTOM REDUCTION IN A SHORT TIME PERIOD.

IF I’M ALREADY A WEEKLY CLIENT, CAN I PARTICIPATE IN AN EMDR INTENSIVE?

Yes. EMDR intensives for current clients are available for enhanced support during crisis/critical incidents, additional resourcing, and as a tool for focused discovery on a specific area of life where growth and transformation is desired.

IF I ALREADY HAVE A PRIMARY THERAPIST, CAN I DO AN EMDR INTENSIVE AS ADJUNCT THERAPY?

Yes. Perhaps you’ve a felt sense that something profound has yet to change, but you’re not quite sure how to shift all the way into a new experience of yourself with your current therapist. Maybe you now cognitively understand new things, yet your body is still confused, so you’re curious about how adjunct EMDR intensive therapy can help. Maybe you know you are impacted by Adverse Childhood/Life Experiences and would like to target those experiences specifically via EMDR as you continue to work with your talk therapist or have been referred by a talk therapist to EMDR. Welcome. We will identify what format is best for you during your initial consultation.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH IN A ONE DAY INTENSIVE?

A half-day intensive offers a multitude of resources and can help to optimize access to resources and resilience, disarm the stress response and provide awareness and tools to continue regulating the nervous system, focus on reparative attachment work or significantly decrease the devastating effects of single event trauma (e.g. negative cognitions, disturbing emotions and body sensations). While significant healing can occur in one half-day intensive, Complex PTSD deserves more treatment than one half-day intensive. Many of my clients experiencing Complex PTSD may continue to work on their trauma histories through monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly half-day intensives.

DO YOU OFFER SLIDING SCALE RATES?

Yes.  sliding scale sessions  are available for adults who were in foster care as minors, as well foster/kinship/adoptive parents who are working with children in the foster care system and would like to address their own trauma histories.

Additionally, I offer reduced rate Critical Stress Response Management and Psychological Safety  and Stabilization services, as well as EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy to address critical incidents/adverse events for child welfare workers, educators, and public safety professionals.

The spots for sliding scale are currently full, but if you are interested in being added to the waitlist, please email me.

CAN MY INSURANCE OR HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT HELP PAY FOR THIS PROGRAM?

IS THIS COVERED BY MY INSURANCE?

Many insurance companies reimburse for the cost of psychotherapy. For insurance purposes, I am considered an Out-of-Network provider for all insurance plans. Receipts I provide meet the documentation requirements necessary for you to submit for reimbursement.  It is best to check in advance with your insurance company about your personal Out-of-Network mental health benefit, coverage, deductible, limitations and reimbursement rate.

OPTIONS/PRICING

WHY DO EMDR INTENSIVES COST MORE?

An Intensive is similar to buying a fast pass at Disneyland. Less wait time, more rides (intense change therapy) in a shorter period of time but with maximum benefit and in premium time slots for your schedule.

In addition to the research on benefits of Intensives. It is often more efficient than weekly sessions by, in three hours,  eliminating warm up and cool down time, and the retraction and re-education that occurs by waiting a week between session.  A half day intensive often includes the intense therapeutic work equivalent of 7-8 weekly sessions in a single 3 hour time frame.

These personalized treatment plans are designed to support your preferred schedule and timeline for accomplishing your treatment goals.

EMDR INTENSIVES

EMDR ADJUNCT THERAPY

Adjunct therapy does not replace or interrupt ongoing therapy; it is supplemental to the primary therapeutic relationship. With adjunct EMDR therapy, clients continue to receive treatment with their primary therapist. Usually adjunct therapy is short term (4-12 sessions or as an INTENSIVE) and desensitizes single incident trauma or simple phobias that interfere with the client’s therapeutic gains.

Treatment is often scheduled in an Intensive format.

The success of treatment is based on clearly defined goals for the EMDR therapist, defined in collaboration with the primary therapist and client.
